SMA PROGRAMS: Biocultural Conservation:
Bilingual Manuals for Community Conservation

With support from U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Consejo EcoRegional Sierra Tarahumara A.C. is designing five bilingual (Rarámuri–Spanish) manuals for environmental education and ecosystem management and restoration in Pino Gordo.

The first manual, Birds of Pino Gordo, with over eighty Rarámuri names for bird species, is to be published in September, 2003 and will be integrated into a community-designed educational curriculum for children and adults.

Other manuals include:

  • Ecological Fire Management,
  • Soil and Watershed Conservation,
  • Wildlife and Plants
  • Manual for Tarahumara Protected Area Managers

The educational project includes community orientation workshops and leadership training.
