SMA PROGRAMS: COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT:
Grants to Strengthen Culture

The Program for Cultural Assistance, PACMYC, recently approved Tarahumara-proposed
projects for Environmental Education in Pino Gordo, a project to strengthen traditional healing practices proposed by Alfonso Molina in Coloradas de la Virgen, and a project by Isidro Baldenegro to restore traditional dances in Coloradas de la Virgen.

These grants, written with assistance of Consejo EcoRegional Sierra Tarahumara A.C., are the first cultural grants to Tarahumara in the often forgotten Guadalupe y Calvo region. Alfonso Molina will gather five ancient shamans (owiruame) from the principle rancherías in Coloradas for an exchange of experiences and ideas. They plan to promote traditional healing practices in the community and hope to begin training young shaman’s apprentices to carry on their healing legacy.
