Organic Nopal Production

Organic Nopal Production in the Barrancas: Agronomist Felix Villanueava developed a project for nopal cactus production and processing in Guapalayna, municipio Urique. A $9,500 grant was approved in 2005 and production began. In 2006 a $45,000 grant was approved by Alianza por el Campo to increase production and develop a small processing center. In total, 18 Tarahumara and mestizo farmers are benefiting from the project. This project and other organic farming initiatives are also supported by an SMA-sponsored restoration of the ancient irrigation system in Guapalayna, completed in 2005.
