SMA PROGRAMS: COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT:
SOLAR RADIO PROJECT

SMA has sponsored installation of solar-powered HF and VHF radios in the Sierra since 1998. In 2002, we installed six new VHF radios and one HF radio in the Baborigame, Pino Gordo and Guachochi regions, bringing the total number of radios installed to twelve.

The radios enable daily communication between indigenous communities struggling against common threats, provide some security to the communities and to SMA staff traveling in the Sierra with portable radios, and enable better planning for community events and training workshops.
